This project gave us the opportunity to dive deep into exploration of diversity between Romanians and Serbs. By using collaborative online tools, students succeeded to significantly improve their digital literacy and 21st Century skills and to reach surprising conclusion – that diversity between nations is, in fact, diversity among people in general. We supported that conclusion by creating NoBorder Dictinary of words from both languages that means the same and are pronounced the same. We created a web site and displayed our Dictionary. We even created a scenario for the school play by using only the words from our Dictionary.
The processes of exploration diversity in local environments showed us how rich and diverse our own communities are. We have build awareness of our communities needs and learned how to lobby for those needs. We had wonderful opportunity to share our (local) conclusions with partner school and with the school from other ACES project (Different but the same).
Project activities started in both school simultaneously. September was dedicated to learning – new web tools, web conferences, methodology. Kick-off meeting gave us new ideas in the field of exploring diversity in our schools. These WS were great success. New energy emerged in both schools. The number of students interested in project increased. Hard work on NoBorder Dictionary was supported by the Faculty of Philology in Belgrade. Scenario for the school play was written by the end of November and web site was created. In Dec, Serbian school went to Bucharest. Christmas carols, conversations about diversity, discovering No Border Dictionary, performing No Border School play, fun at classes marked time in RO. At the beginning of February, Romanians come to Belgrade. Along with students, teachers, parents and principal of the Branislav Nušić school, we talked about diversity, enjoyed workshops, danced national dances, sang national anthems... Facebook page was regularly updated.
The most important results:
1.NoBorder web site and Dictionary - great achievement in spite of being Latino and Slavs.
2.Promotion of diversity in local communities, our schools - During numerous workshops, amazing things unexpectedly occurred - dyslexic students talked about their problems, those who live in families where alcoholism is present publicly faced the problem, Roma talked about the obstacles they face on a daily basis, parents talked about their kids problems, teachers talked about their lives. The spirit of community and a safe environment for all students has been developed in our schools.
3.Civic courage to be proactive in order to improve our quality of life (lobbying and advocacy tactics).
4.Significantly improved level of digital literacy (finding, using, summarizing, evaluating, creating ... information while using digital technologies) and 21st Century Skills (communication, collaboration, critical thinking, technology) as a result of frequent online communication (collaborative web tools).
